A lot of photographers seem to focus on getting the perfect photo. That perfect lighting, angle, composition and colour balance with each photo of who they're shooting with. This is perfectly fine and I'm not bashing anyone here in this post. This is about something that I personally try to achieve in the shoots that I do. Capturing memories. With each photoshoot I've done over the years, I've aimed to capture at least one memory that the cosplayers will want to have forever to fondly remember the shoot. What the memory can be varies each time. Usually the photos that are capturing memories it's a simple moment that most photographers would ignore - and I've seen them be ignored. They're moments that capture genuine emotions and feelings, not just something posed for the camera. It can be a kiss, laughter, or even a moment of unease. I've been thankful to capture different kinds of memories. The above photo of Margaret and Harper from Anime North 2014 is one of my personal favourites. Genuine smiles of two friends cosplaying together. They're happy and having fun and creating an experience they'll look back on with a smile. Another personal favourite is this one that I took of my friends Camille and Vincent at Otakuthon this past August. Genuine smiles of two people in love. Just moments before they kissed - which I also took photos of because they're adorable. Moments and memories that will live on. They are my favourite photos to take and I find they make the biggest impact on a photoshoot in general. They create a unique little part of the shoot that can otherwise be overlooked sometimes. Either because it's not true to the character or it's just what's considered an every day occurrence. These moments are what remind us that these are real people with real feelings. And I've often found that there are a lot of people who look at the photos and forget that and have made some obscene comments - I haven't had many on photos I've taken thankfully, but I've seen quite a lot over the last several years. Do you have a moment or memory in cosplay that was captured in a photo? Share it with me and show me what you love about the photo.
